Ladyzhyn Orphanage in Ukraine is home to over 120 children with moderate to severe intellectual and physical disabilities. Due to a lack of staff resources and funding, there is very limited opportunities and facilities for these children. In 2009, the Foundation completed a major practical project which involved supplying new beds and mattresses for the children. It all started after our Impact Team visited this orphanage in 2007. They were shocked at the needs they saw and wanted to make a difference. They saw that the children's beds were in a state of desrepair. Not only that they were an inadequate design for the type of disabilities and the amount of time the children spent in them. The fundraising project started in 2007, with the Hands of Hope Ukraine Charity Concert. The night was a huge success raising almost $30,000 AUD to supply 117 new beds and cots. Following the concert, the fundraising team spent months researching various options available to provide beds, cots and mattress for every child at the orphanage. The process took much longer than any of us had imagined... They did not give up hope and were fortunate to come across a local manufacturer who was willing to specifically design and make the beds and cots. Once we approved the prototypes, it all came together. In July 2009, a total of 49 beds, 68 cots and 117 mattresses were delivered to the children at the Ladyzhyn Orphanage. Thank you to everyone who helped make a difference.
