| Akha Girls Safe House |
|
In Northern Thailand many of the hill tribes remain marginalised minority groups who live in abject poverty as subsistence farmers. Many are ‘citizens in limbo’, without IDs or rights. The Akha people are the poorest of all hill tribes in this region and have the lowest status level in Thai society. Many young Akha girls leave their villages in the hope of a better life and end up in prostitution. The Foundation is partnering with the Akha Safe House in Maesai. The house is a place of refuge, a home for Akha tribal girls who are at great risk of being sent into the major centres of Thailand for the purpose of prostitution. The project is giving these girls the opportunity to live an alternative life by providing them with education and vocational skills. This lovely home caters for girls ranging in age from five to 17 years. They are receiving all their basic needs plus education, life skills and emotional support.
