| Child Headed Household Project |
|
There are over 100,000 children living in child-headed households, accounting for 13% of Rwandese families. Genocide and the spread of AIDS are the main factors that have led to this situation. With no one looking out for them, these children are very vulnerable to exploitation. They often have to drop out of school to work, and live with the concern of where their next meal is coming from. These children suffer not only from extreme poverty, but also from inadequate socialsupport. They have to fend for themselves as their extended families were affected by the genocide and they receive no government assistance. Since 2007, the Foundation has partnered with African Evangelistic Enterprise (AEE) to establish a socio-economic support program for these children. AEE is currently working with over 750 children in 300 families in the Rwamagana district. The children are receiving emotional support through community mentors who visit them regularly, cows and goats for income generation, new homes, vocational skills training andstart-up capital for small businesses. The children are also part of self-help groups and forums which are empowering them to improve their livelihoods. The Foundation is currently fundraising for more children to receive cows and goats and new mud-brick homes. To get involved, you can help by giving a Gift of Hope.
