Empowering Cambodia was established in 2008 to meet the needs of children from extremely poor families who were relocated from a slum area in Phnom Penh. Many of these children did not have the opportunity to attend school or if they did, their learning was limited due to the quality of education offered by the Khmer Education system. Many of the children also suffered from the effects of poor nutrition, which affects their ability to learn as well as their overall health. The children attend the local government school for half a day and also attend the Empowering Cambodia education centre for half a day. At the centre they receive additional education and assistance with their Khmer studies plus they are taught English, creative skills, hygiene, moral ethics, general life skills, as well as receiving a nutritional meal. There are currently 85 children attending the centre, which is providing a holistic environment in which the children can develop. This project also works with the children's families to empower them to break the poverty cycle. Riverview Children's Foundation is supporting the nutrition program at the Centre, which is providing a healthy daily meal plus monitoring their growth.
