Bali Impact Trip Experience

Robin Masters, a member of the Bali Impact Trip, writes about her experience.

My desire to go on the Bali trip was motivated by a recent holiday to Bali, a place I hadn’t visited since 1983. Having never been on an impact trip before I didn’t know what to expect but was looking forward to spending time with the children in the orphanages in whatever capacity I was needed. I was richly rewarded by the children both young and older who are so grateful and gracious. At Blimbingsari, we did crafts with the young girls, kite making with the boys, sports with all of them and English lessons in small groups. We ate with them, played with them and watched with admiration as they performed for us at the end of the day, their traditional Balinese dancing and music. At Melaya and Singaraja , where the children are older, the format was similar, except that  myself and my older daughter, introduced jewellery making and were blown away by the creative talent that emerged from both the girls and boys. It was lovely to see them all wearing their pieces so proudly when they had finished. We also played a variety of board games which was loads of fun for all of us but the clear winner, there, was Bingo. Two of the ladies on the trip, Jill and Pam ran a very loud, extremely funny game and although it was very hot and humid, everyone got involved.  It was so good to be able to have so much fun with these kids even though we didn’t speak their language and their English was limited.

Part of the team at Melaya  spent a morning painting one of the buildings and were ably assisted by some of the older boys. The overwhelming response from the team at the end of the visit was just how much the kids appreciated us being there interacting with them and how much we learnt from being with them. It was very sad to say goodbye and tears were shed but memories live on.

Bali Trip Day 14

Bali Day 14

Today was a free day our last day as a team before we all went our different ways tomorrow.

Some stayed at the hotel and just walked around 2 went to Kuta and 9 of was went on a bike ride down the mountain With a company called Bali ECO run y an Australian The nine were Jill,Robin,Pam,Imelda,John,Doug,Davor,Mark,and Me (Matt)

We were picked up from the Hotel and driven up the mountain Our main guide was a young guy 21 named Ketuk. He was great had a great grasp of the English language after only about 15 months learning and had a lot of the a Lot the Aussie slang down pat. He gave us a run down about himself and the stuff we saw on the way up the mountain. We stopped of at a tourist spot for breakfast over looking the lake and two of the mountains the place was called Pentelokan (kintamani) the smoking mountain it is still active today you can still see the spot the lava flowed in the last eruption. Beautiful spot. Then we drove up a bit higher past some huge open tired rice paddies. Then we drove onto a spot called Grand BAS Acro Tourisum had heaps of different stuff growing . The plant that produces the chocolate , Vanilla plant ,chillies, Alvera, and the coffee bean plants, mail and femali plants the mail ghas a smooth taste the female slightly bitter. But the main thing there are the type of cat called a which eats a particular coffee bean and as it pass through it system it changes something in the bean then after is was been to the toilet the poo is collected as in side is a bean now that they use to make coffee it is along and slow process to sought them thus it is very expensive we got to have a sip of coffee. Then we reached the bikes we all got one and helmet and began a ride back down the mountain. One guide went in front and one at the back and the van went behind him to help if any break downs or injures. We went down all the back streets and small lanes it was amazing it was overcast so not to much sun. We wound our way past rice fields being harvested there were this was mostly done by the older women. Then past compounds were family group live together. Some huge trees called Banyas. There were some big pot holes on the way so as we road in single file the Leader Ketuk ( our guide) wall call out what was ahead eg bike coming truck coming etc and it would get passed down the line We also said hello to everyone as we went past especially the children they would come rushing out to say hello and wave. The children walking home from school wanted to high five you as you rode past. It was a great ride 90% down hill so it was easier. We reached the bottom section were the van was waiting to take us to lunch it was a 25km ride I was amazed We all had plenty of water on the way an made a total of 4 stops for about 10min each

Were we were shown different things on the way .We were given a nice ice cold sponge to cool us down. At the end. Jill and Doug decided to ride on a bit further 15min up hill. The rest of us went to the lunch spot. Again a great spot in the middle of nowhere. Then the trip back to the hotel we arrived about 3pm All included in the price about $45 Aus. We got home got cleaned up had a rest then met in the lobby for a taxi ride to a place called Muria for a last meal as a team together. A great night. And a great day. Off to bed at 9.30pm Tomorrow we have breaky together before we start to say goodbye to a few people over the day and the next few days as we all go our separate ways.

Bali Trip Day 13

<!-- @page { size: 8.5in 11in; margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } -->

Today we visit the last to orphanages

We all met in lobby of hotel 9.45am for our bus trip to the first orphanage KIP We loaded all the gear on to to the bus for the children and set off. W e first stopped by a huge rice paddy field which was in a valley then went up the other side about 9 tiers then it was on Gianya for lunch a lovely spot . Then on to the Orphanage This is a disabled orphanage most are deaf some more than others some have a mental disability some physical. When we got there the children were waiting for us they were all from primary school the older ones were still at school This was a small place and very cramped not much space for children to play . We all sat around with the children while the head of the orphanage explained about the place and his staff of 3(Hendra interpreted) and then we were able to ask questions. While this as happening the children were talking between each other in sign language which was a mixture of American Indonesian and the own brand. Doug who is a bit deaf was able to show the children his hearing aids the older bigger ones and the new improved smaller ones all the children were fascinated by it . He also brought up with him some cards and posters of Ausland alphabet signing which we left with them. I was able ( as I know sign language) run through with them the alphabet and then spell there names out and we signed my name is and then spelt there name they were fast to learn and I'm sure by next year they will be able to spell in Australian Sign

Then we handed out the Gift packs boy did there faces light up even more the packs have Toothpaste soap a toy and other hygiene products ( we have been giving these out at every orphanage we have been to) This is all thanks to the faith giving of you the people of Riverview Church We then went outside and played with balls and blew bubbles they had a lot of fun and so did we While this was happening the older ones came home from school and joined in.

We said our goodbyes and hopped back on the bus for Bangli Orphanage when arriving the children

lined up and we greeted them all 35 of them it is a small church at the front with a back section with dorms toilets and cooking area this is very cramped. We all met in the small church hall and the leader ran through with us about the place and the staff Then we were shown round at the front it is just concrete area fro the to play. Out the back are threes mall rooms two for the girls and one for the boys The boys 20 of them are all in one room with bunks but there are only fourteen beds so the smaller ones sleep two a bed they each have a box for there clothes and one toilet and shower in. There is also another small stores room and small kitchen area with one small stove they have two tables were they eat and do there study there is no back fence and it then drops away straight down about 100 metre drop to the stream below ( They are in the midst of trying to raise funds to move to a bigger place ) After this we handed out the gift pack and played games with them some did oragame other played with marbles and made boomerangs played snakes and ladders the older boys played with all the Footballs soccer balls and tennis balls we also had a water bomb fight. These children have so little yet were so happy and welcoming. It was time to leave they all lined up again and we went down the line saying good bye to each of them.

It was back on the bus and back to the hotel We got back got cleaned up and met back in lobby for our final tea together we went to a place called Muria had a great night got home and of to bed by 10pm
